Interview with Beng2 Pas by: Uncluster.com

Bambang Sutejo as known as Beng Beng, considered as one of the top Indonesian guitarist, who also raise his band, Pas Band. His career was began on 1993, through Pas’ debut “Four Through The Sap”, one of the first independent releasing in Indonesia, that sold about 7000 copies. Now, Beng Beng not only play in his band, but he is a clinician also. Follow their conversation.

uncluster: What is your music project right now?
Beng Beng: First, I got new band called Air, it has 6 songs already, then rock nasyid album that just has 7-8 songs now, then Guitartainment compilation.

uncluster: Can you explain about this compilation?
Beng Beng: This is compilation belongs to a guitarist community. But not only the guitarists, but the collector also.

uncluster: Then, what is the most interesting about the compilation?
Beng Beng: There are two songs that would be played by 9 guitarists, just like choir, but there are guitars only.

uncluster: Every musicians have their own reasons when playing music in each album, so what are yours?
Beng Beng: Spontaneity. Because Pas Band had no concept and it’s all depend on the mood and spontaneity, when I am in the bad mood, it's impossible to me to keep cheerful when I playing, then when Richard resigned, we got different atmosphere, and we got another condition when Sandy signed in. I think that’s why we played different in the each album, because for me, music is about the feeling expression, that represent the condition at the time.

uncluster: In the guitar context, which album is not significant enough for you?
Beng Beng: May be Pas 2.0. I didn’t feel good when recording this album, so I couldn’t gave my best.

uncluster: Do you think that band can represent the personal feeling and thought?
Beng Beng: I do. Because I can express my feeling when I am in Pas Band and so do my friends perhaps. For example, in the song titled “Kucing” Trisno didn’t want to play with us, then all of us were agreed, finally he asked Pupen’s Robyn with him, and other musicians also.

uncluster: Do you think the whole Pas’ album are satisfying enough?
Beng Beng: When it just released I think I was satistfied. But by the time there were always dissatisfaction and questions ‘why didn’t I put more in this part or made this part like this or like that”. But I made those idea in to the next album anyway.

uncluster: If there is someone who don’t know Pas Band, and she/he want to listen your album, which
Beng Beng: album would be better as beginning?
From the first album surely, because each album represent the character and condition at the time. Yeah just like a photo albums, when you open those, so you would feel the different atmosphere, for example, we got the really different condition when Yuki got married and Richard got child.

uncluster: Who is the local musicians who representative enough for you?

Beng Beng: Mocca I think, then Burgerkill, and I’m listening Koil lately.

uncluster: And what album that you are listening to recently?

Beng Beng: Extreme’s Saudades de Rock, Bullet for My Valentine and Trivium.

uncluster: When you were 17, what were you listening to?

Beng Beng: David Lee Roth and Chick Corea

uncluster: Your opinion about music in Indonesia?
Beng Beng: We don’t have to judge any band, or label or peoples. If you don’t like their music, and you don’t agree with that, you suppose to breakthrough all of that with your music.
